Environmental Complex of the Sete Cidades lagoon
In this project on the banks of the Sete Cidades Lagoon we worked with the following premises and objectives: the site occupation, layout and design and concentration of infrastructures and recreational facilities were to respect, and be fully integrated into, the surrounding landscape and optimise fruition by the resident community.
As the Sete Cidades Lagoon is a place where various ‘moments’ exist, the design is adapted to the surrounding context. The buildings consist of a modular metal structure with multiple modules of 6×6 m and 6×5 m. The number of modules required depends on the type of facility. Each of the facilities has the module structure as a rule, whereby in some parts the structure is lled with panels and in others with oor-to-ceiling metal window frames only.
The more exclusive facilities (boat house, shower rooms and support services) are completely closed by the panels. They simulate the basalt stone so typical of the Azores, but o er more advantageous physical attributes in terms of building quality.
The remaining buildings (e.g., yacht club and café) are one half closed (with the aforementioned panels) and one half open, using ‘Vitrocsa’ metal frames. The glass façades face the lagoon and the road along its banks.
The entrances to the structures are on the sides.
